Leaving Guernsey, or choosing a different chapter

The fact that this island suits me does not oblige it to suit you. You can appreciate what has been good here and still decide to leave.

Give each person's view room, including work, health, care, money and relationships. You do not need to defend your choice to an entire community.

A difficult week or season may be worth looking at in context, but there is no month in which a decision to leave becomes valid. Your circumstances may call for a change now.

If you have space to explore alternatives, ask what would need to change for life here to feel better. If you already know your next step, practical planning may be more useful than waiting.

Ask the Population Management Office how departure affects your particular Permit or Certificate and any future application. Immigration status is a separate check. Do not assume a future right to return.

Check housing contracts or sale arrangements, employment obligations, school notice requirements and tax matters with the relevant people or qualified advisers. Make a plan around your own dates rather than an assumed property-sale timetable.

The permits guide is an overview, not a decision on your individual status.

You might want to thank someone, have a goodbye coffee or keep a friendship going from elsewhere. Do what feels right and manageable. Leaving does not create a social debt.

Connections can matter beyond an address. You can wish a place well and choose your own future.

Consider the life you want then, and check the housing, immigration and permit rules that apply at that time. A warm personal welcome and legal eligibility are different things.

There is no need to predict that next chapter now. A decision can be right for the circumstances in which you make it.
